It had gone by the name South Atlantic City for many years before the State Legislature provided the means for Margate to become a municipality in 1869. With a railroad line extending through the city and the construction of a restaurant/hotel in the shape of an elephant named “Lucy”, it wasn’t long before South Atlantic City was a memory of the past.
